At once blistering and poetic, the ravages of colonialism cast a dark shadow over the South American landscape in EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, the third feature by Ciro Guerra. Filmed in stunning black-and-white, SERPENT centers on Karamakate, an Amazonian shaman and the last survivor of his people, and the two scientists who, over the course of 40 years, build a friendship with him. The film was inspired by the real-life journals of two explorers (Theodor Koch-Grünberg and Richard Evans Schultes) who traveled through the Colombian Amazon during the last century in search of the sacred and difficult-to-find psychedelic Yakruna plant.

Set in the opulent drawing rooms of eighteenth-century English society, Love & Friendship focuses on the machinations of a beautiful widow, Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale), who, while waiting for social chatter about a personal indiscretion to pass, takes up temporary residence at her in-laws’ estate. While there, the intelligent, flirtatious, and amusingly egotistical Lady Vernon is determined to be a matchmaker for her daughter Frederica—and herself too, naturally. She enlists the assistance of her old friend Alicia (Chloë Sevigny), but two particularly handsome suitors (Xavier Samuel and Tom Bennett) complicate her orchestrations. Adapting Jane Austen's unpublished early novella Lady Susan, Whit Stillman returns to the Sundance Film Festival (where his Metropolitan premiered in 1990) in top form with his latest comedy of manners. Kate Beckinsale excels in her role as the deliciously devious Lady Vernon and delivers each line with relish. With exquisite period detail and a script teeming with bon mots and witty dialogue, Love & Friendship is a rare—and rarified—treat.

Hit by a falling object in a freak accident, an unnamed man awakens from a coma with £8.5m in compensation and his memory gone. All that remains is a fragmentary image – a small boy at the top of a stairwell in an old house, reaching out his hand to an old lady on the floor below – which the man physically reconstructs in the hope of triggering a more complex memory.

Using his wealth, the man acquires a block of apartments and populates it with actors to play out the scene again and again and again. But as scraps of other memories present themselves and the man becomes ever more desperate to reconnect to life, his re-enactments grow increasingly complicated and risky, leading him to an unsolved crime and the secret of his undoing.

SING STREET takes us back to 1980s Dublin seen through the eyes of a 14-year-old boy named Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) who is looking for a break from a home strained by his parents' relationship and money troubles, while trying to adjust to his new inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, über-cool and beautiful Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and with the aim of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band’s music videos. There’s only one problem: he’s not part of a band…yet. She agrees, and now Conor must deliver what he’s promised - calling himself "Cosmo" and immersing himself in the vibrant rock music trends of the decade, he forms a band with a few lads, and the group pours their heart into writing lyrics and shooting videos. Inspired by writer/director John Carney's (ONCE, BEGIN AGAIN) life and love for music, SING STREET shows us a world where music has the power to take us away from the turmoil of everyday life and transform us into something greater.

Arriety director Hiromasa Yonebayashi's Oscar nominated animation and Studio Ghibli's final film is a heartfelt and magical adaptation of Joan G. Robinson's classic novel.

Lonely pre-teen Anna prefers sketching and solitude to company; even when it comes to her evidently doting adoptive mother. When Anna suffers an asthma attack, her worried parents send her to rural Kushiro, where she happens upon a mysterious abandoned mansion and the equally enigmatic Marnie, a similarly aged girl with cascading blonde locks and old-fashioned attire. The two quickly become firm (and secret) friends but Marnie's propensity for disappearing and reappearing suggest that she's no ordinary 12-year-old. What’s more, she seems to induce memory loss in Anna, who wakes up after their encounters, inexplicably dirty or shoeless.
